Directions

All good writers check their writing for mistakes. Until you get the hang of editing, an editing checklist helps you hunt for one type of mistake at a time. It should include:

1.    Capitals
2.    Punctuation
3.    Spelling
4.    Verb tense
5.    Subject-verb agreement
6.    Sentence fragments

Check your writing for each item, correct the mistakes, and cross it off your list.

Read the sentence below. What item on the checklist are you looking for when you want to decide whether a verb should be “works” or “worked?”

Last year, Mary works/worked during summer vacation.
