Let’s take another look at the diagram that shows the ingredients and the products involved in photosynthesis.

If we were to rewrite this diagram as a chemical formula, we would get:

The C’s, H’s, and O’s in this formula are symbols for chemical elements, like those you’d see on the periodic table.

  • C = carbon
  • H = hydrogen
  • O = oxygen

So HO is the chemical formula for water. It shows that water is made up of the elements hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).
