The C’s, H’s, and O’s in this formula are symbols for chemical elements, like those you’d see on the periodic table.
- C = carbon
- H = hydrogen
- O = oxygen
So H₂O is the chemical formula for water. It shows that water is made up of the elements hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).
