Another way to classify EM energy is by the frequency of the waves. Frequency describes how often a wave peaks. Think of waves hitting the shore in different rhythms: some waves are long and slow, others are short and come one after the other.

Frequency is the reciprocal of wavelength, which means:

  • The longer the wavelength, the lower the frequency.
  • The shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency.

Sort the waves by frequency, from lowest to highest. You can click on the EM spectrum to enlarge the image.
