Directions

To see how tall your son is compared to other children his age, you could use a different type of average called the median: that's the middle number in a data set.

To find the median:

  1. Order the numbers from least to greatest.
  2. Find the middle number.

For example, look at this number set: 6, 2, 10, 5, 7

Now order the numbers from least to greatest: 2, 5, 6, 7, 10

Pick out the middle number: 2, 5, 6, 7, 10

6 is the median, or middle number. In this set, half the numbers are less than 6 and half the numbers are greater than 6.

3’8”, 3’3”, 3’6”, 3’4”, 3’5”, 3’4”, 3’7”
