Social Security tax deducts 6.2% from your gross income. To figure out how much Social Security tax you’ll pay, follow this example:

Ana’s gross pay is $400.

  1. Convert 6.2% to a decimal by dropping the percent sign and moving the decimal point two places to the left. 6.2% = 0.062
  2. Multiply gross pay by 0.062:  $400 × 0.062 = $24.80
  3. Ana pays $24.80 in Social Security tax.
Melinda’s gross pay is $570. If the Social Security tax is 6.2%, how much will she pay in Social Security?
