The single sector that releases the most CO₂ into the atmosphere is the electrical power industry. We don’t think we’re burning fuel and releasing CO₂ into the atmosphere when we turn on the lights or our computer, but consider how that electricity is generated: most likely through burning fossil fuels.

Here’s a map of power plants around the world. Each black dot represents a power plant that emits more than 100,000 tons of CO₂ each year. How much is a ton of CO₂? One ton of CO₂ fills 100,000 party balloons. 100,000 tons of CO₂ would fill 10,000,000,000 (that’s 10 billion) balloons!
