Pre-viewing
Activity
Before playing the video for the class, you’ll want to activate students’ relevant
knowledge in order to guide the viewing experience. Discussion, focused
freewrites, brainstorming, and
collaborative activities, in which students work together to solve a problem
or do an experiment, are a good way to do this.
Here are some activities you might use to introduce the Sheila Green segment
and focus students’ attention on vocabulary building:
- Discussion: What do you do when you come
across a word you don’t know? [possible answers: look it up in
the dictionary, skip it, use surrounding text to figure out the meaning,
etc.]
- Brainstorm: Brainstorm words (and their
definitions) that students have learned recently. How did they encounter
and master these words?
- Collaborative activity: Write a sentence
on the board with a difficult word. As a class try to figure out its
meaning.
