the Video
Because TV411 embeds literacy learning in the complexity of real life,
each segment necessarily addresses a variety of topics. For example, in
the “Lifelines” segment “Baby
on the Way,” a woman learns how to use the index and table of contents
in a book to research her pregnancy and communicate with her doctor. This
segment demonstrates specific research and reading skills,
such as knowing the parts of a book and scanning for information, while
exploring the more general theme of
health. Each segment of TV411 presents a variety of teaching opportunities.
Which ones to pursue depend on your curriculum objectives and the interests
of your students.
To give you a better sense of the many possibilities in a single segment
of TV411, let’s take a look at a “Milestones” portrait
of Sheila Green, an adult learner from Pittsburgh who improves her reading
skills and reaches her goal of getting a new job (episode 4).
