Not surprisingly, research shows that adults with poor reading, writing, and math skills face many barriers to economic stability. Our own research has led us to include many lessons on financial literacy and basic consumer math skills in the TV411 television series.
Now a choice selection of TV411 videos are featured in the TV411 Financial Literacy Kit, along with lesson plans for classroom teachers, and print and web activities for adult learners. The six-unit kit covers a range of topics including reading and understanding pay stubs, credit card offers, and mortgage charts. An independent evaluator, who assessed the impact of our lessons on a group of adult basic education students who read between grades 3.5 and 6.7, concluded that the TV411 Financial Literacy Kit materials are effective at increasing adult learners’ knowledge of financial topics.
The newest addition to the TV411 series is a half-hour episode that explores key reading and math skills people need to make informed decisions about investing and saving. Segments from this episode are now featured in TV411 Save Smart, a multimedia financial literacy curriculum available free on DVD. Click
