Whether you're reading a book, newspaper, or magazine article, it's always a good idea to summarize the information in your head or on a piece of paper. Summarizing, or summing up the main ideas, helps you focus on the most important points in the article or story.

When you summarize, eliminate unnecessary details. Focus on the main idea of the whole passage.

The cold, probably the most common illness known, has no safe or effective cure. Colds are produced by viruses, in particular a group of viruses called rhinoviruses. Because colds can be caused by different types of viruses, it’s nearly impossible for scientists to find one remedy that kills them all.
