Directions

You don't have to figure out a price to the last penny, unless you have a calculator on hand. An estimate will do.

Here are tricks that make math easier to do in your head.

  1. Round off. For example, you could round that toaster oven price of $59.99 up to $60.
  2. Find 10% of the price.

10% of $60 is 0.10 × $60.00 which is $6.00. In fact, to find 10% of any number, just move the decimal point of that number one place to the left. For example, 10% of $25.50 is $2.55 and 10% of $1.00 is $0.10.

A $69.99 dress is marked down 10%. Which is the best estimate for the sale price?

$7

$63

$50

Try doing as much of this calculation as you can in your head. Begin by rounding the original price to a number that is easy to work with.
