We use percentages every day when reading nutritional labels or shopping for bargains. But sometimes percentages can be confusing. It helps to know the math behind them.

Let's take it one step at a time.

Percent (%) is a way to express part of a whole. "%" means "out of 100." So 25 cents is 25% of 100 cents (one dollar).

50 out of 100 = 50%. 30 out of 100 = 30%.

What percent is 47 out of 100?
