RegretsThese
days Sheila Greene is a busy travel agent at West Penn
Triple AAA Motor Club. She puts together cruise and
tour packages for people from all over the world, spending
a lot of time on the computer researching the best
deals for her clients. She loves her job. But it wasn't
always this way. In fact, five years ago Greene couldn't
read very well. "I could read, but I had difficulty," she
says. "But like most people with reading problems,
I just worked around it." After scoring too low on
a test to enter a travel agent training program, Greene
realized that things had to change. "I couldn't ignore
that I scored so low. I knew that if wanted to become
a travel agent, and have a chance at making good money,
that I was going to have to take courses to improve
my reading level." And that's just what she did. Greene
attended an intensive six-month adult reading course
at Bidwell Training Center in Pittsburgh. The class
opened up a new world for her. "I was given material
that I could really relate to-a lot of African American
stories that were very dramatic, stories about gang
members, and mothers dealing with difficult children.
It got my brain working." Although it wasn't easy to
go back to school as an adult, Greene never lost sight
of her goals. With hard work and dedication she passed
her course with flying colors. In 1999, she received
a Student of the Year award from the state of Pennsylvania.
For Greene, winning the award was proof that she could
accomplish anything if she just set her mind to it. "I
didn't want life to catch me with yesterday's regrets," she
says, "so I kept pushing."
Today, one
of Greene's greatest joys is reading to her children and helping
them with their homework. "Now I don't feel ashamed when I read
stories to my kids. I can feel the smoothness in my voice. Before
I used to hesitate over the words, but not anymore."
